Basic Private Pilot Requirements

Instruction may begin at any
age |

Be at least 16 years of age to
solo |

Be at least 17 years of age
for private pilot's license |

Be able to read, speak, and
understand the English language |

Obtain a 3rd class medical
certificate |
 |
Complete a ground study course |
 |
Pass a written exam for
private pilot |
 |
Pass a practical (oral &
flight) test for private pilot given by an FAA designated examiner |
Private Pilot Training Requirements
 |
40 Hours Minimum Flight
Training Time, comprised of: |
 |
20 Hours Dual Instruction (3
hours at night) |
 |
5 Hours Cross Country |
 |
10 Hours Local Flying |
 |
Ground Training |
This training may be a formal
classroom course, one-on-one training, video package, or self-taught from the
FAA outlined materials. Prior to taking the FAA written exam, however, you must
present a written certificate from your instructor, or evidence that your course
of study meets the requirements stated in 14 CFR, Part 61.1
These hours are the FAA minimum
requirements outlined in 14 CFR, Part 61. Actual hours for flight
proficiency to pass the required FAA practical test will vary with each student.
* Flight instruction may begin at any age. Properly logged flight instruction
does not expire, and will count toward total requirements for licensing.
